New to face fit testing?

We have loads of info on our website (click the button) and below are a few of the most frequently asked questions:

What is a face fit test?

A face fit test measures how well a mask fits a wearer’s face.

The most common and effective method for testing is the ‘quantitative’ test. An individual, wearing their mask, is connected to a machine via a small plastic tube. The machine monitors the number of airbourne particles (including household dust etc) passing into the mask whilst it is worn. If particles are detected, then the mask is leaking (doesn’t fit).

The test takes around 20 minutes in total and at the end, the machine gives a pass or fail as to whether the mask fits the wearer.

Do I actually need a test? Is face fit testing a legal requirement?

If a ‘close fitting*’ mask is being worn to protect the wearer from a health and safety risk, then yes, having a face fit test is effectively a legal requirement.

The ACoP’s supporting several sets of regulations all require RPE (respiratory protective equipment) to be fit tested as part of the selection process.

*A close fitting mask is one that relies on making a seal with the wearer’s face (see example images above).

Do I need to be clean shaven for a face fit test?

In short - yes!

A face fit test will not be carried out on a person with facial hair of any length. This includes short stubble. It is generally accepted (and referenced in EN 529:2005) that to be clean shaven, a person who normally has facial hair should have shaved within an 8 hour period.

However, a wearer only needs to be clean shaven in the area where the mask seal touches their face. So, a small gohtee type beard or moustache would be permitted (provided it doesn’t interfere with the seal at all).
