University Duct
TASK
The structure is a duct located within the grounds of Northern University. The purpose of the entry was the tender survey carried out by multiple contractors simultaneous. The University organized ‘Survey Day’ and handed the confined space aspect to us.
CHALLENGE
* Multiple contractors entering at the same time
* Hot environments (heat exhaustion)
* Restricted space (claustrophobia)
* Poor lighting, low visibility
* Various/different access points e.g. vertical (fall risk)
* Complex emergency casualty extraction
SOLUTION
* Redline provided the Risk Assessment, Method Statement and Emergency Procedures for the task.
* Our Team Leader conducted safety briefing before commencing the works to ensure all parties are aware of the task, risks and individual roles.
* We supplied all safety equipment to the clients e.g. access/egress equipment and personal gas monitors, emergency escape sets and full body rescue harnesses to all entrants.
*We split contractor into smaller groups, each lead by safety escort from Redline. to minimize risk of…. ? of what and a standby rescue team in case of emergency.
* We had our standby Rescue Team (ready to?) in case of emergency.

*Having all the safety measures in place significantly reduced the risk of injuries in confined space. (what measures?)
*Having a skilled confined space/rescue team at the clients disposal gave them a piece of mind and ensured safer work environment?
* Clients managed to accomplish the task without a need to organize a numerous visits. (saved time & money? - reason - multiple people able to enter at the same time?)
